Weaving is my passion. Building a story one thread at a time.
I weave because it enriches the fabric of my life. I am continuously intrigued by the changing environment and challenged by the unexpected and exciting nature of existence. I am inspired by the beauty that surrounds me on this Clare Island that lies in the Atlantic quietly unfolding it’s secrets. It begins with one thread, an idea, a plan, an inspiration and a vision. From there it builds into a piece with a life of its own. I allow it to unfold as I work and it is always a surprise. Each piece is individual and unique. I do not make two of anything. This is important to me because I believe in the unique and everchanging nature of everything. I like to work in response rather than to a fixed plan allowing “mistakes” to create new opportunities. My world is a world of patterns, colour and texture. Each piece is like a symphony created in movements with different moods growing ineach new thread woven This means that it takes a long time to complete each piece.
I have been weaving for over 30 years and work in a variety of materials ranging from my own sheep’s wool, homespunand naturally dyed to fine linen and silk. I like to think of my work as being multifunctional and for that reason hate to define its purpose. For a scarf could be a wall hanging and a wall hanging could be a table runner and a table runner could be a bed accent. You must decide this for yourself
I am very open and love to do personal commissions and collaberations so if there is something you have in mind do not hesitate to contact.
Clare Island in the county of Mayo off the west coast of Ireland is a fantastic place to live. A place where time has not quite caught up with its unspoiled nature. There are140 full time residents which gives rise to an intimate and integrated experience. One of an extended family, a safe and wholesome lifestyle with many challenges to be sure. The sea is really a part of me. I am surrounded by it; I submerge in it and I do not think I could live very happily without it. I think it reflects in my work which often takes on its personality in movement, colour and space.
